Matthew Cowan’s practice is in the realm of traditional European customs and culture. His work combines elements of photography, video, installation and performance to reflect the inherent strangeness of the enduring popularity of long established folk customs in modern society. Humour and the subversion of the usual social order are constant themes in his work, developed through his investigation of the celebrations and performances of folk traditions.
Matthew Cowan completed his MA in Fine Art at The University of Northumbria in 2005. Prior to this he lived and worked as a photographer and artist in Newcastle upon Tyne, London and New Zealand. He has recently exhibited in Poland, New York and London; he was also Artist in Residence at Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s Creative Studios in 2011.
