Self-portrait at 27 Weeks
“I produce performance-based videos which use humour and irony to investigate what it means to be a woman in contemporary society. I concentrate on exaggerated portrayals of women in cinema and literature; particularly the inconsistency between liberated female roles and romantic views depicted in high and popular culture.”
Ellie Rees lives and works in London where she is currently an Associate Lecturer at Byam Shaw School of Art and Central St. Martins College of Art and Design.
She has exhibited and performed internationally at galleries and museums including: Tate Modern, London, The Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) London; El Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Caracas,Venezuela, the international video festival LOOP, Madrid and ArtSway in the New Forest. In 2009 she was included in a major retrospective of British artists’ portraiture at The Neuberger Museum of Art, New York. Ellie has held residencies in the UK, Europe and the United States.
In 2008 she was the first artist in residence at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, supported by the Esmée Fairbarn Foundation, where she went on to have a solo exhibition.
