When Men were Men,
Women were Women,
And an Axe was an Axe…Gawain rode out of Camelot to seek his doom.

When an unjolly green giant pitches up in your castle wielding an axe, it’s wise to avoid any rash decision making. One year later, gorgeous Gawain – a bit of a brash champion and the King’s nephew –  rides out in golden armour on his white horse. His mission is suicidal, his journey long and cold; he is constantly ambushed … but the greatest danger comes from his own heart.

As he ducks the advances of sharp blades and dishonest wives, love, war, and chivalry combine in this, a classic tale from King Arthur’s Court. This performance is epic and magic, offset with intelligent irreverence.

Kamishibae (Japanese Visual Storytelling)

Performed in the Theatre Foyer Saturday 2:00-3:00

This form of Japanese storytelling was originally performed by bicycling Kamishibai Men, touring the villages selling sweets. They presented picture-based stories from miniature theatres on the backs of their bicycles (Kami means paper, and shibai means drama) to attract customers. I tell several of these attractive fables, including The Mouse’s Wedding, The Weaver Princess, and The Turtle and the Fisherman. They are ideal for nursery, reception, and primary age children, particularly children who have English as an additional language.

Sarah Rundle got locked away in a laboratory to be a biochemist, but tunnelled her way to freedom. She ran away to train in community storytelling in south Cheshire and in acting at Drama Studio London, and is now an actor and storyteller. Over the last seven years she has performed in theatres, cafes, museums, yurts, and a Saxon longhouse, and has taken the performance storytelling scene by storm with her first solo performance piece – Gawain. Sarah’s work is intelligent, dynamic and defiantly un-twee…
